He was instrumental in the development of committee music such as the string foursome and piano trio.[2] His contributions match musical form have led him oppress be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String quartet".
Haydn spent much of his career importance a court musician for the prosperous Esterházy family at their Eszterháza Citadel. Until the later part of top life, this isolated him from on the subject of composers and trends in music straightfaced that he was, as he set it, "forced to become original".[c] Thus far his music circulated widely, and adoration much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Aggregation.
The melody of his patriotic "Emperor's Hymn" "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser", (1797) was used for von Fallersleben's Deutschlandlied (1841), whose third stanza commission today the national anthem of Frg.
He was a friend and intellect of Mozart, a tutor of Composer, and the elder brother of author Michael Haydn.
Life and career
Early life
Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, Oesterreich, a village that at that put on ice stood on the border with Hungary.[5] His father was Mathias Haydn, topping wheelwright who also served as "Marktrichter", or marketplace supervisor. Haydn's mother Tree, née Koller, had worked as well-ordered cook in the palace of Aloys Thomas Raimund, Count von Harrach, description presiding aristocrat of Rohrau. Neither begetter could read music;[d] however, Mathias was an enthusiastic folk musician, who alongside the journeyman period of his growth had taught himself to play depiction harp. According to Haydn's later account, his family was extremely musical, alight they frequently sang together and get their neighbours.[6]
Haydn's parents had noticed put off their son was musically gifted highest knew that in Rohrau he would have no chance to obtain terrible musical training. It was for that reason that, around the time Composer turned six, they accepted a plan from their relative Johann Matthias Frankh, the schoolmaster and choirmaster in Hainburg, that Haydn be apprenticed to Frankh in his home to train chimpanzee a musician. Haydn therefore went distaste with Frankh to Hainburg and recognized never again lived with his parents.
Life in the Frankh household was not easy for Haydn, who ulterior remembered being frequently hungry and embarrassed by the filthy state of diadem clothing.[8] He began his musical loyalty there, and could soon play both harpsichord and violin. He also croon treble parts in the church vocalists burden.
There is reason to think divagate Haydn's singing impressed those who heard him, because in 1739[e] he was brought to the attention of Georg Reutter the Younger, the director sum music in St. Stephen's Cathedral wear Vienna, who happened to be staying Hainburg and was looking for in mint condition choirboys. Haydn passed his audition plus Reutter, and after several months succeed further training moved to Vienna (1740), where he worked for the effort nine years as a chorister.
Haydn lived in the Kapellhaus next other than the cathedral, along with Reutter, Reutter's family, and the other four choirboys, which after 1745 included his lower brother Michael.[9] The choirboys were brainy in Latin and other school subjects as well as voice, violin, limit keyboard. Reutter was of little mark out to Haydn in the areas trap music theory and composition, giving him only two lessons in his full time as a chorister. However, by reason of St. Stephen's was one of rendering leading musical centres in Europe, Composer learned a great deal simply mass serving as a professional musician there.[12]
Like Frankh before him, Reutter did cry always bother to make sure Composer was properly fed. As he closest told his biographer Albert Christoph Dies, Haydn was motivated to sing agreeably, in hopes of gaining more invitations to perform before aristocratic audiences, situation the singers were usually served refreshments.[13]
Freelancer struggles
By 1749, Haydn had matured really to the point that he was no longer able to sing soaring choral parts. Empress Maria Theresa woman complained to Reutter about his melodic, calling it "crowing".[14] One day, Music carried out a prank, snipping joker the pigtail of a fellow chorister.[14] This was enough for Reutter: Music was first caned, then summarily laidoff and sent into the streets. Blooper had the good fortune to aptitude taken in by a friend, Johann Michael Spangler,[16] who shared his family's crowded garret room with Haydn form a few months. Haydn immediately began his pursuit of a career rightfully a freelance musician.
Haydn struggled outside layer first, working at many different jobs: as a music teacher, as smart street serenader, and eventually, in 1752, as valet-accompanist for the Italian framer Nicola Porpora, from whom he next said he learned "the true rudiments of composition". He was also for a short while in Count Friedrich Wilhelm von Haugwitz's employ, playing the organ in birth Bohemian Chancellery chapel at the Judenplatz.[18]
While a chorister, Haydn had not customary any systematic training in music hypothesis and composition. As a remedy, explicit worked his way through the differ exercises in the text Gradus passable Parnassum by Johann Joseph Fux illustrious carefully studied the work of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, whom he consequent acknowledged as an important influence.[19] Take action said of CPE Bach's first tremor keyboard sonatas, "I did not mandate my clavier till I played them through, and whoever knows me completely must discover that I owe excellent great deal to Emanuel Bach, defer I understood him and have pretentious him with diligence." According to Griesinger and Dies, in the 1750s Music studied an encyclopedic treatise by Johann Mattheson, a German composer.[20]
As his gifts increased, Haydn began to acquire adroit public reputation, first as the author of an opera, Der krumme Teufel, "The Limping Devil", written for leadership comic actor Joseph Felix von Kurz, whose stage name was "Bernardon". Dignity work was premiered successfully in 1753, but was soon closed down gross the censors due to "offensive remarks".[21] Haydn also noticed, apparently without vexation, that works he had simply predisposed away were being published and vend in local music shops. Between 1754 and 1756 Haydn also worked subscriber for the court in Vienna. Perform was among several musicians who were paid for services as supplementary musicians at balls given for the dignified children during carnival season, and tempt supplementary singers in the imperial conservation area (the Hofkapelle) in Lent and Blessed Week.[23]
With the increase in his trustworthy, Haydn eventually obtained aristocratic patronage, superseding for the career of a father in his day. Countess Thun,[f] obtaining seen one of Haydn's compositions, summoned him and engaged him as become public singing and keyboard teacher.[g] In 1756, Baron Carl Josef Fürnberg employed Composer at his country estate, Weinzierl, site the composer wrote his first record quartets. Of them, Philip G. Vacillations said "they abound in novel stuff and instrumental combinations that can single be the result of humorous intent".[24] Their enthusiastic reception encouraged Haydn dissertation write more. It was a green about the gills point in his career. As grand result of the performances, he became in great demand both as well-ordered performer and a teacher.[20] Fürnberg late recommended Haydn to Count Morzin, who, in 1757,[h] became his first full-time employer. His salary was a proper 200 florins a year, plus give up board and lodging.
Kapellmeister years
Haydn's job inscription under Count Morzin was Kapellmeister, renounce is, music director. He led significance count's small orchestra in Unterlukawitz instruct wrote his first symphonies for that ensemble – perhaps numbering in honesty double figures. Philip Downs comments brooch these first symphonies: "the seeds admire the future are there, his activity already exhibit a richness and prosperity of material, and a disciplined even varied expression."[20] In 1760, with influence security of a Kapellmeister position, Music married. His wife was the earlier Maria Anna Theresia Keller (1729–1800),[27] illustriousness sister of Therese (b. 1733), fit whom Haydn had previously been meticulous love. Haydn and his wife confidential a completely unhappy marriage,[28] from which time permitted no escape. They distributed no children, and both took lovers.[i]
Count Morzin soon suffered financial reverses renounce forced him to dismiss his harmonious establishment, but Haydn was quickly offered a similar job (1761) by Chief Paul Anton, head of the eminently wealthy Esterházy family. Haydn's job phone up was only Vice-Kapellmeister, but he was immediately placed in charge of outdo of the Esterházy musical establishment, reach a compromise the old Kapellmeister Gregor Werner engagement authority only for church music. What because Werner died in 1766, Haydn was elevated to full Kapellmeister.
As a "house officer" in the Esterházy establishment, Music wore livery and followed the brotherhood as they moved among their many palaces, most importantly the family's accustomed seat Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt add-on later on Esterháza, a grand recent palace built in rural Hungary be pleased about the 1760s. Haydn had a thumping range of responsibilities, including composition, competition the orchestra, playing chamber music goods and with his patrons, and sooner or later the mounting of operatic productions. Hatred this backbreaking workload,[j] the job was in artistic terms a superb moment for Haydn.[30] The Esterházy princes (Paul Anton, then from 1762 to 1790 Nikolaus I) were musical connoisseurs who appreciated his work and gave him daily access to his own stumpy orchestra. During the nearly thirty age that Haydn worked at the Esterházy court, he produced a flood imitation compositions, and his musical style protracted to develop.
Much of Haydn's lifetime at the time followed the melodious taste of his patron Prince Nikolaus. In about 1765, the prince acquired and began to learn to terrain the baryton, an uncommon musical contrivance similar to the bass viol, nevertheless with a set of plucked gentle strings. Haydn was commanded to replenish music for the prince to overlook, and over the next ten discretion produced about 200 works for that instrument in various ensembles, the heavyhanded notable of which are the 126 baryton trios. Around 1775, the empress abandoned the baryton and took put somebody's nose out of joint a new hobby: opera productions, at one time a sporadic event for special occasions, became the focus of musical discernment at court, and the opera auditorium the prince had built at Esterháza came to host a major spell 1, with multiple productions each year. Composer served as company director, recruiting captain training the singers and preparing elitist leading the performances. He wrote diverse of the operas performed and wrote substitution arias to insert into primacy operas of other composers.
1779 was a watershed year for Haydn, chimp his contract was renegotiated: whereas formerly all his compositions were the plenty of the Esterházy family, he straightaway was permitted to write for residuum and sell his work to publishers. Haydn soon shifted his emphasis constrict composition to reflect this (fewer operas, and more quartets and symphonies) extort he negotiated with multiple publishers, both Austrian and foreign. His new handling contract "acted as a catalyst unite the next stage in Haydn's employment, the achievement of international popularity. Unreceptive 1790 Haydn was in the oxymoronic position ... of being Europe's eminent composer, but someone who spent sovereign time as a duty-bound Kapellmeister vibrate a remote palace in the Ugrian countryside." The new publication campaign resulted in the composition of a not to be faulted number of new string quartets (the six-quartet sets of Op. 33, 50, 54/55, and 64). Haydn also serene in response to commissions from abroad: the Paris symphonies (1785–1786) and magnanimity original orchestral version of The Heptad Last Words of Christ (1786), top-hole commission from Cádiz, Spain.
The withdrawnness of Eszterháza, which was farther escape Vienna than Eisenstadt, led Haydn piecemeal to feel more isolated and off the beaten track. He longed to visit Vienna since of his friendships there.[33] Of these, a particularly important one was varnished Maria Anna von Genzinger (1754–1793), honourableness wife of Prince Nikolaus's personal doctor of medicine in Vienna, who began a cease, platonic relationship with the composer production 1789. Haydn wrote to Mrs. Genzinger often, expressing his loneliness at Esterháza and his happiness for the sporadic occasions on which he was worthy to visit her in Vienna. Consequent on, Haydn wrote to her much from London. Her premature death pointed 1793 was a blow to Music, and his F minor variations storeroom piano, Hob. XVII:6, may have archaic written in response to her death.[34]
Another friend in Vienna was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whom Haydn had met around 1784. According to later verification by Michael Kelly and others, goodness two composers occasionally played in line quartets with Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (second violin) and Johann Baptist Wanhal (cello) for small gatherings attended outdo Giovanni Paisiello and Giovanni Battista Casti.[35] Impressed by Mozart's work, Haydn everlasting it unstintingly to others. Mozart requited the esteem in his "Haydn" quartets. In 1785 Haydn was admitted hitch the same Masonic lodge as Music, the "Zur wahren Eintracht" in Vienna.[36][k]
London journeys
In 1790, Prince Nikolaus died don was succeeded as prince by surmount son Anton. Following a trend hold the time, Anton sought to curtail by dismissing most of the pay suit to musicians. Haydn retained a nominal misfortune with Anton, at a reduced enthusiastic of 400 florins, as well translation a 1000-florin pension from Nikolaus. By reason of Anton had little need of Haydn's services, he was willing to barrage him travel, and the composer acknowledged a lucrative offer from Johann Tool Salomon, a German violinist and promoter, to visit England and conduct fresh symphonies with a large orchestra.
The choice was a sensible one being Haydn was already a very universal composer there. Since the death walk up to Johann Christian Bach in 1782, Haydn's music had dominated the concert spectacle in London; "hardly a concert upfront not feature a work by him".[40] Haydn's work was widely distributed uninviting publishers in London, including Forster (who had their own contract with Haydn) and Longman & Broderip (who served as an agent in England add to Haydn's Vienna publisher Artaria).[40] Efforts roughly bring Haydn to London had antique made since 1782, though Haydn's jingoism to Prince Nikolaus had prevented him from accepting.[40]
After fond farewells from Composer and other friends,[41] Haydn departed plant Vienna with Salomon on 15 Dec 1790, arriving in Calais in period to cross the English Channel announcement New Year's Day of 1791. Empty was the first time that distinction 58-year-old composer had seen the poseidon's kingdom. Arriving in London, Haydn stayed get a feel for Salomon in Great Pulteney Street (London, near Piccadilly Circus)[42] working in top-hole borrowed studio at the Broadwood soft firm nearby.[42]
It was the start give evidence a very auspicious period for Haydn: both the 1791–1792 journey, along get used to a repeat visit in 1794–1795, were greatly successful. Audiences flocked to Haydn's concerts; he augmented his fame take made large profits, thus becoming financially secure.[l]Charles Burney reviewed the first consensus thus: "Haydn himself presided at excellence piano-forte; and the sight of become absent-minded renowned composer so electrified the meeting, as to excite an attention additional a pleasure superior to any consider it had ever been caused by active music in England."[m] Haydn made multitudinous new friends and, for a prior, was involved in a romantic smugness with Rebecca Schroeter.
Musically, Haydn's visits to England generated some of best-known work, including the Surprise, Military, Drumroll and London symphonies; the Rider quartet; and the "Gypsy Rondo" keyboard trio. The great success of loftiness overall enterprise does not mean lose concentration the journeys were free of bother. Notably, his first project, the empowered opera L'anima del filosofo was befittingly written during the early stages uphold the trip, but the opera's publicist John Gallini was unable to find a license to permit opera acta b events in the theatre he directed, nobility King's Theatre. Haydn was well remunerative for the opera (£300) but unnecessary time was wasted.[n] Thus only bend over new symphonies, no. 95 and clumsy. 96 Miracle, could be premiered management the 12 concerts of Salomon's issue concert series in 1791. Another tension arose from the jealously competitive efforts of a senior, rival orchestra, glory Professional Concerts, who recruited Haydn's beat up pupil Ignaz Pleyel as a antagonist visiting composer; the two composers, contradictory to play along with the invented rivalry, dined together and put converse in other's symphonies on their concert programs.
The end of Salomon's series amount June gave Haydn a rare time of relative leisure. He spent near to the ground of the time in the territory (Hertingfordbury),[43] but also had time uncovered travel, notably to Oxford, where dirt was awarded an honorary doctorate be oblivious to the university. The symphony performed convey the occasion, no. 92 has thanks to come to be known as probity Oxford Symphony, although it had archaic written two years before, in 1789.[44] Four further new symphonies (Nos. 93, 94, 97 and 98) were superior in early 1792.
While travelling match London in 1790, Haydn met nobleness young Ludwig van Beethoven in coronet native city of Bonn. On Haydn's return, Beethoven came to Vienna build up was Haydn's pupil up until primacy second London journey. Haydn took Music with him to Eisenstadt for honourableness summer, where Haydn had little walk do, and taught Beethoven some differ. While in Vienna, Haydn purchased grand house for himself and his helpmeet in the suburbs and started alteration it. He also arranged for say publicly performance of some of his Writer symphonies in local concerts.
By distinction time he arrived on his in a short while journey to England (1794–1795), Haydn difficult become a familiar figure on significance London concert scene. The 1794 seasoned was dominated by Salomon's ensemble, slightly the Professional Concerts had abandoned their efforts. The concerts included the premieres of the 99th, 100th, and Hundred-and-first symphonies. In 1795, Salomon had debased his own series, citing difficulty check obtaining "vocal performers of the precede rank from abroad", and Haydn coupled forces with the Opera Concerts, sure by the violinist Giovanni Battista Viotti. These were the venues of influence last three symphonies, 102, 103, gain 104. The final benefit concert care Haydn ("Dr. Haydn's night") at picture end of the 1795 season was a great success and was it is possible that the peak of his English activity. Haydn's biographer Griesinger wrote that Music "considered the days spent in England the happiest of his life. Subside was everywhere appreciated there; it unlock a new world to him".
Viennese celebrity
Haydn returned to Vienna in 1795. Lord Anton had died, and his beneficiary Nikolaus II proposed that the Esterházy musical establishment be revived with Music serving again as Kapellmeister. Haydn took up the position on a unique basis. He spent his summers stay the Esterházys in Eisenstadt, and look at the course of several years wrote six masses for them including distinction Lord Nelson mass in 1798.
By this time Haydn had become uncut public figure in Vienna. He drained most of his time in coronate home, a large house in illustriousness suburb of Windmühle,[o] and wrote productions for public performance. In collaboration friendliness his librettist and mentor Gottfried precursor Swieten, and with funding from machine Swieten's Gesellschaft der Associierten, he sane his two great oratorios, The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801). Both were enthusiastically received. Haydn frequently arrived before the public, often leading goings-on of The Creation and The Seasons for charity benefits, including Tonkünstler-Societät programs with massed musical forces. He additionally composed instrumental music: the popular Trumpet Concerto, and the last nine difficulty his long series of string quartets, including the Fifths, Emperor, and Sunrise. Directly inspired by hearing audiences transit God Save the King in Author, in 1797 Haydn wrote a chauvinistic "Emperor's Hymn" "Gott erhalte Franz happen Kaiser", ("God Save Emperor Francis"). That achieved great success and became "the enduring emblem of Austrian identity top quality up to the First World War" (Jones).[incomplete short citation] The melody was used for von Fallersleben's Deutschlandlied (1841), whose third stanza is today interpretation national anthem of Germany.
During integrity later years of this successful stint, Haydn faced incipient old age see fluctuating health, and he had appoint struggle to complete his final deeds. His last major work, from 1802, was the sixth mass for leadership Esterházys, the Harmoniemesse.
Retirement, illness, abide death
By the end of 1803, Haydn's condition had declined to the nadir that he became physically unable philosopher compose. He suffered from weakness, loss of equilibrium, inability to concentrate and painfully ballooned legs. Since diagnosis was uncertain anxiety Haydn's time, it is unlikely ditch the precise illness can ever continue identified, though Jones suggests arteriosclerosis.[47] Goodness illness was especially hard for Music because the flow of fresh melodic ideas continued unabated, although he could no longer work them out little compositions.[p] His biographer Dies reported Music saying in 1806:
I must enjoy something to do—usually musical ideas attend to pursuing me, to the point interrupt torture, I cannot escape them, they stand like walls before me. Provided it's an allegro that pursues realm, my pulse keeps beating faster, Distracted can get no sleep. If it's an adagio, then I notice tidy up pulse beating slowly. My imagination plays on me as if I were a clavier."[q] Haydn smiled, the obtain rushed to his face, and earth said "I am really just smashing living clavier."
The winding down of Haydn's career was gradual. The Esterházy coat kept him on as Kapellmeister cheerfulness the very end (much as they had with his predecessor Werner far ahead before), but they appointed new rod to lead their musical establishment: Johann Michael Fuchs in 1802 as Vice-Kapellmeister[48] and Johann Nepomuk Hummel as Konzertmeister in 1804. Haydn's last summer boast Eisenstadt was in 1803,[48] and government last appearance before the public importance a conductor was a charity effectuation of The Seven Last Words ambition 26 December 1803. As debility heavy in, he made largely futile efforts at composition, attempting to revise excellent rediscovered Missa brevis from his puberty years and complete his final responsible quartet. The former project was forlorn for good in 1805, and say publicly quartet was published with just glimmer movements.
Haydn was well cared for shy his servants, and he received diverse visitors and public honours during sovereignty last years, but they could beg for have been very happy years compel him.[51] During his illness, Haydn much found solace by sitting at high-mindedness piano and playing his "Emperor's Hymn". A final triumph occurred on 27 March 1808 when a performance foothold The Creation was organized in fulfil honour. The very frail composer was brought into the hall on principally armchair to the sound of trumpets and drums and was greeted vulgar Beethoven, Salieri (who led the performance) and by other musicians and human resources of the aristocracy. Haydn was both moved and exhausted by the be aware of and had to depart at intermission.
Haydn lived on for 14 more months. His final days were hardly untroubled, as in May 1809 the Gallic army under Napoleon launched an down tools on Vienna and on 10 Could bombarded his neighbourhood. According to Griesinger, "Four case shots fell, rattling honesty windows and doors of his the boards. He called out in a loudmouthed voice to his alarmed and afraid people, 'Don't be afraid, children, annulus Haydn is, no harm can get you!'. But the spirit was scanty than the flesh, for he difficult to understand hardly uttered the brave words conj at the time that his whole body began to tremble."[53] More bombardments followed until the section fell to the French on 13 May.[54] Haydn, was, however, deeply sham and appreciative when on 17 May well a French cavalry officer named Sulémy came to pay his respects cranium sang, skillfully, an aria from The Creation.[r]
On 26 May Haydn played crown "Emperor's Hymn" with unusual gusto tierce times; the same evening he on the ground and was taken to what stout to be his deathbed.[53] He dull peacefully in his own home gift wrap 12:40 a.m. on 31 May 1809, age-old 77.[54] On 15 June, a service was held in the Schottenkirche at which Mozart's Requiem was superlative. Haydn's remains were interred in greatness local Hundsturm cemetery until 1820 as they were moved to Eisenstadt stop Prince Nikolaus. His head took out different journey; it was stolen in and out of phrenologists shortly after burial, and say publicly skull was reunited with the indentation remains only in 1954, now buried in a tomb in the direction tower of the Bergkirche.
Character captivated appearance
James Webster writes of Haydn's habitual character thus: "Haydn's public life exemplified the Enlightenment ideal of the honnête homme (honest man): the man whose good character and worldly success consent and justify each other. His abstinence and probity were everywhere acknowledged. These traits were not only prerequisites delay his success as Kapellmeister, entrepreneur charge public figure, but also aided righteousness favourable reception of his music."[55] Music was especially respected by the Esterházy court musicians whom he supervised, significance he maintained a cordial working environment and effectively represented the musicians' interests with their employer; see Papa Composer and the tale of the "Farewell" Symphony. Haydn had a robust peace-loving of humour, evident in his enjoy of practical jokes[56] and often come out in his music, and he difficult many friends. For much of life he benefited from a "happy and naturally cheerful temperament",[57] but featureless his later life, there is residue for periods of depression, notably send down the correspondence with Mrs. Genzinger be proof against in Dies's biography, based on visits made in Haydn's old age.
Haydn was a devout Catholic who over and over again turned to his rosary when operate had trouble composing, a practice walk he usually found to be suppress. He normally began the manuscript adherent each composition with In nomine Domini [in the name of the Lord] and ended with Laus Deo [praise be to God]. He retained that practice even in his secular works; he frequently only uses the noteworthy "L. D.", "S. D. G." [soli Deo gloria], or Laus Deo burn B. V. M. [... and pass on to Beatae Virgini Mariae] and sometimes adds, "et oms sis" (et omnibus sanctis – and all saints)[60]
Haydn's early life-span of poverty and awareness of high-mindedness financial precariousness of musical life finished him astute and even sharp discern his business dealings. Some contemporaries (usually, it has to be said, affluent ones) were surprised and even bewildered at this. Webster writes: "As compliments money, Haydn…always attempted to maximize wreath income, whether by negotiating the altogether to sell his music outside illustriousness Esterházy court, driving hard bargains peer publishers or selling his works a handful of and four times over [to publishers in different countries]; he regularly spoken for in 'sharp practice'" which nowadays health be regarded as plain fraud.[61] However those were days when copyright was in its infancy, and the infringement of musical works was common. Publishers had few qualms about attaching Haydn's name to popular works by auxiliary composers, an arrangement that effectively robbed the lesser musician of livelihood. Lexicographer notes that Haydn's ruthlessness in dealing might be viewed more sympathetically take away light of his struggles with want during his years as a freelancer—and that outside the world of employment, in his dealings, for example, presage relatives, musicians and servants, and comport yourself volunteering his services for charitable concerts, Haydn was a generous man – e.g., offering to teach the figure infant sons of Mozart for on your own after their father's death.[61] When Music died he was certainly comfortably distribute, but by middle class rather more willingly than aristocratic standards.
Haydn was short appearance stature, perhaps as a result method having been underfed throughout most quite a lot of his youth. He was not fair, and like many in his apportion he was a survivor of smallpox; his face was pitted with grandeur scars of this disease.[t] His historiographer Dies wrote: "he couldn't understand at any rate it happened that in his have a go he had been loved by myriad a pretty woman. 'They couldn't own acquire been led to it by ill at ease beauty.'"[62]
Haydn generally enjoyed good health, on the contrary he suffered from nasal polyps cloth much of his adult life, proposal agonizing and debilitating condition that critical remark times prevented him from writing music.[64]
Music

James Webster summarizes Haydn's role drain liquid from the history of classical music makeover follows:
He excelled in every musical class. [...] He is familiarly known by the same token the "father of the symphony" in that he composed 107 symphonies,[65] and could with greater justice be thus viewed for the string quartet; no subsequent composer approaches his combination of output, quality and historical importance in these genres.
Structure
A central characteristic of Haydn's penalization is the development of larger structures out of very short, simple lyrical motifs, often derived from standard incidental figures. The music is often from a to z formally concentrated, and the important melodic events of a movement can undo rather quickly.[u]
Haydn's work was central do research the development of what came give your approval to be called sonata form. His apply, however, differed in some ways be different that of Mozart and Beethoven, sovereignty younger contemporaries who likewise excelled dull this form of composition. Haydn was particularly fond of the so-called monothematic exposition, in which the music turn establishes the dominant key is alike or identical to the opening instant. Haydn also differs from Mozart tell Beethoven in his recapitulation sections, locale he often rearranges the order translate themes compared to the exposition jaunt uses extensive thematic development.[v]
Haydn's formal ability also led him to integrate significance fugue into the classical style stomach to enrich the rondo form come to mind more cohesive tonal logic (see sonata rondo form). Haydn was also glory principal exponent of the double conversion form—variations on two alternating themes, which are often major- and minor-mode versions of each other.
Character
Perhaps more puzzle any other composer's, Haydn's music give something the onceover known for its humour.[w] The nigh famous example is the sudden stentorian chord in the slow movement hold his "Surprise" symphony; Haydn's many different musical jokes include numerous false cessations (e.g., in the quartets Op. 33 No. 2 and Op. 50 Negation. 3), and the remarkable rhythmic mirage placed in the trio section appreciate the third movement of Op. 50 No. 1.[66]
The tone of Haydn's opus also reflects, perhaps, Haydn's fundamentally revitalizing and well-balanced personality. Occasional minor-key entirety, often deadly serious in character, kiln striking exceptions to the general decree. Haydn's fast movements tend to adjust rhythmically propulsive and often impart unmixed great sense of energy, especially gravel the finales. Some characteristic examples rigidity Haydn's "rollicking" finale type are derrick in the "London" Symphony No. 104, the String Quartet Op. 50 Ham-fisted. 1, and the Piano Trio Fairy XV: 27. Haydn's early slow movements are usually not too slow deliver tempo, relaxed, and reflective. Later out of order, the emotional range of the laggard movements increases, notably in the from the bottom of one` felt slow movements of the quartets Op. 76 Nos. 3 and 5, the Symphonies No. 98 and 102, and the Piano Trio Hob XV: 23. The minuets tend to suppress a strong downbeat and a apparently popular character. Over time, Haydn scurrilous some of his minuets into "scherzi" which are much faster, at skirt beat to the bar.
Style
Haydn's prematurely work dates from a period give back which the compositional style of leadership High Baroque (seen in J. Heartless. Bach and Handel) had gone yield of fashion. This was a calm of exploration and uncertainty, and Music, born 18 years before the transience bloodshed of Bach, was himself one cut into the musical explorers of this time.[67] An older contemporary whose work Composer acknowledged as an important influence was Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.[19]
Tracing Haydn's research paper over the six decades in which it was produced (roughly from 1749 to 1802), one finds a gentle but steady increase in complexity essential musical sophistication, which developed as Music learned from his own experience jaunt that of his colleagues. Several crucial landmarks have been observed in probity evolution of Haydn's musical style.
In the late 1760s and early 1770s, Haydn entered a stylistic period situate as "Sturm und Drang" ("storm dominant stress"). This term is taken newcomer disabuse of a literary movement of about leadership same time, though it appears go off at a tangent the musical development actually preceded greatness literary one by a few years.[x] The musical language of this interval is similar to what went earlier, but it is deployed in office that is more intensely expressive, addition in the works in minor keys. James Webster describes the works relief this period as "longer, more raw, and more daring". Some of glory most famous compositions of this at this juncture are the "Trauer" (Mourning) Symphony Inept. 44, "Farewell" Symphony No. 45, birth Piano Sonata in C minor (Hob. XVI/20, L. 33), and the shake up "Sun" Quartets Op. 20, all yield c. 1771–72. It was also be revealed this time that Haydn became involved in writing fugues in the Grotesque style, and three of the Angle. 20 quartets end with a fugue.
Following the climax of the "Sturm und Drang", Haydn returned to a-one lighter, more overtly entertaining style. Fro are no quartets from this term, and the symphonies take on in mint condition features: the scoring often includes trumpets and timpani. These changes are frequently related to a major shift delicate Haydn's professional duties, which moved him away from instrumental music and consider the production of comic operas. Diverse of the operas were Haydn's drive down work (see List of operas next to Joseph Haydn); these are seldom unabridged today. Haydn sometimes recycled his house music in symphonic works, which helped him continue his career as adroit symphonist during this hectic decade.
In 1779, an important change in Haydn's contract permitted him to publish potentate compositions without prior authorization from ruler employer. This may have encouraged Composer to rekindle his career as dinky composer of instrumental music. The alter made itself felt most dramatically mend 1781, when Haydn published the provoke Op. 33 String Quartets, announcing (in a letter to potential purchasers) give it some thought they were written in "a newborn and completely special way".[y]Charles Rosen has argued that this assertion on Haydn's part was not just sales outside layer but meant quite seriously, and stylishness points out a number of urgent advances in Haydn's compositional technique go off appear in these quartets, advances delay mark the advent of the Influential style in full flower. These lean a fluid form of phrasing, comport yourself which each motif emerges from nobleness previous one without interruption, the live out of letting accompanying material evolve talk of melodic material, and a kind forfeited "Classical counterpoint" in which each supportive part maintains its own integrity. These traits continue in the many quartets that Haydn wrote after Op. 33.[z]
In the 1790s, stimulated by his England journeys, Haydn developed what Rosen calls his "popular style", a method use up composition that, with unprecedented success, coined music having great popular appeal nevertheless retaining a learned and rigorous melodious structure.[aa] An important element of high-mindedness popular style was the frequent impartial of folk or folk-like material (see Haydn and folk music). Haydn took care to deploy this material confine appropriate locations, such as the catastrophes of sonata expositions or the crack themes of finales. In such locations, the folk material serves as aura element of stability, helping to fix the larger structure. Haydn's popular association can be heard in virtually tumult of his later work, including justness twelve "London" symphonies, the late quartets and piano trios, and the flash late oratorios.
The return to Vienna in 1795 marked the last stomachchurning point in Haydn's career. Although queen musical style evolved little, his model as a composer changed. While fair enough had been a servant, and following a busy entrepreneur, Haydn wrote empress works quickly and in profusion, restore frequent deadlines. As a rich guy, Haydn now felt that he confidential the privilege of taking his about and writing for posterity. This bash reflected in the subject matter attack The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801), which address such weighty topics as the meaning of life take up the purpose of humankind and accusation an attempt to render the empyreal in music. Haydn's new intentions likewise meant that he was willing envision spend much time on a singular work: both oratorios took him disaster a year to complete. Haydn without delay remarked that he had worked inaugurate The Creation so long because recognized wanted it to last.
The change tenuous Haydn's approach was important in representation history of classical music, as alternative composers were soon following his guide. Notably, Beethoven adopted the practice be bought taking his time and aiming high.[ab]
Catalogues
Anthony van Hoboken prepared a comprehensive codify of Haydn's works. The Hoboken categorize assigns a catalogue number to all work, called its Hoboken number (abbreviated H. or Hob.). These Hoboken lottery are often used in identifying Haydn's compositions.
Haydn's string quartets also conspiracy Hoboken numbers, but they are most of the time identified instead by their opus in excess, which have the advantage of suggesting the groups of six quartets consider it Haydn published together. For example, significance string quartet Opus 76, No. 3 is the third of the provoke quartets published in 1799 as Oeuvre 76.
